Preservation of Digital Media, Digitized and Online Collections

Participants will learn the latest techniques, standards, and best practices to ensure their digital collections will be preserved using the best possible techniques with current technologies. Reformatting/remastering in a digital age will also be covered. The viability and longevity of tapes, CDs, etc. and their players, viewers, and sustainability will be explored, as will backup copyright considerations.

Presenters:
Danielle Mericle is the Digitization Lab Coordinator for the Digital Consulting and Production Services Unit at the Cornell University Library Digital Scholarship Services division. In addition to overseeing the creation of digital content for Olin Library, she serves as project manager for many of University’s grant projects. She has conducted numerous digitization workshops and presented papers at Digital Library Federation, ALA, and the National Archives of Peru. Previously, she worked as the primary photographer for New York Public Library’s Digital Unit, working on such diverse projects as Making of America II, Utopia, and Performing Arts in America, 1875-1923. Danielle Mericle holds an MFA from Syracuse University, and has taught photography at a number of institutions, including Alfred University, Syracuse University, and Ithaca College.
Fiona Patrick is Project Coordinator for Digital Consulting and Production Services at the Cornell University Library Digital Scholarship Services Division. She oversees multiple digital collection projects and a range of initiatives including the Cornell Daily Sun newspaper digitization and the Library's Print-on-Demand program. Her background includes workflow planning, budgets, managing outsourced relationships, and marketing and promotion of digital collections. She has a BA in history and an MS in library science.

In this workshop participants will create their own Disaster Plan to take back to their library on a flash drive for implementation.
