Assessing Your Library's Potential for Disaster

This workshop will explore the types of collection materials and types of threats a prudent library should anticipate with proactive planning and prevention. In addition to fire and water, smart planners will consider theft, terrorism, pandemic, and online collection vulnerabilities. A regional panel of librarians whose libraries suffered disastrous damage will share their experiences.

Presenters:
Barbara Berger Eden is the Director of the Department of Preservation and Collection Maintenance at Cornell University Library. She has worked in preservation at Cornell University since 1988. Barbara has managed numerous grant-funded projects that have focused on digitization; conservation; microfilming; education and training. She is the past chair of the Preservation and Reformatting Section of the American Library Association and an active member of the Preservation Administrators Group of the New York State Comprehensive Research Libraries. In addition, she has been actively engaged in the many changes in the field and has served as a consultant to organizations as diverse as the Syracuse University Library, Union County Municipality, the Brooklyn Museum of Art Library, and the History Center of Tompkins County.

Michele Brown is head of Book Conservation at Cornell University, and a graduate of Fordham University. She received a certificate in Hand Bookbinding and Restoration from the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, England in 1977. She has been involved in book conservation since 1977, and has been a contract conservator for Harvard University, Dartmouth College, the Boston Athenaeum, and the University of Vermont, as well as a book conservator at the Boston Public Library, before taking over the management of the book conservation operation at Cornell in 1995. She has taught numerous bookbinding classes and conducted many workshops on care and handling of library materials, disaster preparedness, and mold remediation. She is a member of the Guild of Book Workers, and the American Institute for Conservation (AIC).

This workshop will explore general environmental issues including temperature and humidity and their potential effects on pest and mold growth. Attendees will learn how to create a collections survey, use a Preservation Environment Monitor (PEM), interpret the results of environmental monitoring and apply the results. Each participant will receive a PEM. This workshop is limited to 25 participants.

Protecting the Collections

This session will examine the roles housekeeping, shelving, storage, and handling play in disaster preparedness. Proper repair of bound materials will be discussed. Particular vulnerabilities of books, pamphlets, paper documents (manuscripts, maps, posters), and photographic materials to disasters will be described.

Preservation of Digital Media, Digitized and Online Collections

Participants will learn the latest techniques, standards, and best practices to ensure their digital collections will be preserved using the best possible techniques with current technologies. Reformatting/remastering in a digital age will also be covered. The viability and longevity of tapes, CDs, etc. and their players, viewers, and sustainability will be explored, as will backup copyright considerations.

Recovery of Wet Materials
