NY 3Rs: Moving the Front Lines Online: Embedding Reference Librarians in Online Classes

Course Description
Students are not always aware of the resources available through the library, so embedding a librarian into an online course module to assist in navigating databases and locating, evaluating, and citing the best sources for projects can be an invaluable support service. In this 2-hour class, learn how the embedded program began at my institution, how it works on a daily basis, how it's grown in the past couple of years, and how to implement an embedded program at your own library.

• Librarians will identify best practices and share new ideas for the embedded program.
• Librarians will begin to develop an embedded program for their institutions.

Instructor:  April Aultman Becker is the Senior Librarian & Education Coordinator at the Research Medical Library at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She has been with the institution since the fall of 2011. April comes to MD Anderson from San Jacinto College, where she coordinated the distance learning and embedded librarian programs, provided point-of-need reference, and worked closely with the health sciences department. She earned her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of North Texas in 2005. Prior to academic librarianship, April was a high school librarian, elementary school librarian, and high school English teacher. April is an active member of the Texas Library Association. April hopes to extend and enhance the library’s virtual presence and educational programs by collaborating with departments to develop specialized curriculum to meet their needs, online and in person.
