Solo library settings offer many rewards, but many challenges, too. Not only are you the only librarian, turning your hand to everything that needs doing, but there is no substitute when you need to learn new ways to do it! Even networking with colleagues is very hard to arrange when you can’t get away to meet and coach one another. SCRLC is here to help – we’ve planned a lunch hour, online session especially for solo libraries. On Thursday, February 25, 12:00 noon-1:00 pm,  SCRLC is hosting the first regional Solo Libraries’ Special Interest Group (Solo SIG) online lunch. Solo SIG is open to library staff in all types of libraries.

It will be held “in” SCRLC’s virtual meeting room in OPAL. You bring your lunch and we will bring the group together. The session is free, but you must register (form at http://scrlc.org/site/view/310 ) to receive connection details. Participants will need an Internet-connected computer and speakers (or earphones).  A microphone (or headset) will allow you to speak to those attending, otherwise you can share your thoughts via type/chat.

Our first topic will be “How Do You Keep Up?” The conversation will encompass keeping up with new products, techniques, and ideas, as well as time management. This discussion will be led by Nora Hardy, MLS, who managed a small energy utility library before joining SCRLC as Assistant Director.

There are no requirements or fees to join the SOLO SIG. Topics, programs, schedules, and events will be developed in response to the attending members’ interests and constraints. Possible services for SIG members include listserv, blog, or Twitter discussions; face-to-face events; lunch (or breakfast) online discussions; workshops; and library tours. Your ideas are invited! If you are interested in the SOLO SIG, but cannot attend, please email or call me (Nora Hardy, nhardy@scrlc.org, 607-273-9106) with your suggestions.
