Dr. Martin was instrumental in assisting the Corning Museum of Glass in salvaging their collection after the flood of 1972 by offering them space in the college library. He served on various museum and library boards including the Corning Public Library, Friends of the Library, the Northeast Museums Association, and the Corning-Painted Post Historical Society. Prior to his positions at the Corning Museum of Glass as Deputy Director & Rakow Library Director, Dr. Martin was a Professor of English and Director of the Corning Community College Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library.
Dr. Martin, who died on September 7, 2007, was a devoted supporter of all libraries and a long-time supporter of SCRLC, serving on the Council’s Board of Trustees from 1987-1991, and as Board President for the last three years of his term. Under his leadership, the Council’s Trust, which was particularly interested in continuing education and training for library staff, was founded. On Friday, 22 May 2009 the training room was dedicated in honor of Dr. John (Jack) H. Martin. Mrs. Phyllis Martin and Jack's son, Todd, were able to join us as we honored a leader who dedicated so much of his time, thinking, expertise, and enthusiasm to the library community. “Dr. Martin advocated continuing education opportunities for all library workers, so it is very appropriate that the Board of Trustees is naming the center in his honor,” remarked SCRLC Executive Director, Mary-Carol Lindbloom. “He understood that excellent libraries require a highly trained staff and that the Council must offer a wide-range of learning opportunities to accomplish this.”
